As a focal point of New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision, NY community energy programs have the potential to lead the country in empowering municipalities with more democratic, clean, resilient and localized energy markets.
Now, more than ever, local communities can take charge of their energy future.
Through the "Community Choice Aggregation" (CCA) Opt-Out Program, entire NY communities are now empowered to negotiate with their energy providers for significantly better terms for all of their residents and businesses. The NY pilot program in Westchester has saved residents ~$8M and is responsible for the largest purchase of renewable energy NY State history. And as of March 2018, CCAs can include and incentivize the development of local renewable generation.
Local community groups may partner with CCA Administrators to determine the Program's priorities and ensure that energy dollars and jobs stay in the community.
We are currently working on NYC-specific legislation that will empower whole neighborhoods to participate in CCA. To support the bill, see our Action page.
