Our Mission
Harnessing the power of community to scale climate action.
A toolbox of programs and strategies allowing you and your neighbors to tackle the challenges of the clean energy transition head-on.
Founded on the belief that everyone can:
Benefit from the transition to renewable energy.
Be a key part of the climate solution.
Founded by Mike Gordon, Joule Community Power’s initiatives consistently leverage market innovation, driving impactful change at scale.
1981: Mike’s innovations include the nation’s first heating oil collective, New York Public Interest Group’s (NYPIRG).
Saving the eastern seaboard hundreds of millions in heating oil costs.
2000: Mike founded Consumerpowerline (now CPower), the first demand response aggregator in the U.S., pioneering a $2 billion annual industry.
Empowering large energy consumers to decrease demand and reducing the need to build new polluting power plants.
2015: With a goal to enable powerful grassroots climate action, Mike led the establishment of the first NY Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) and helped to shepherd through enabling governing regulation.
Joule Community Power (formerly Joule Assets) was born.
Today, the firm enables tens of thousands of residents and small businesses to switch to renewable electricity at a time.
Entire communities can now make the switch to renewable electricity, promote new renewable development, and keep benefits local.
Joule Community Power serves more than 60 municipalities, within and outside of New York, reaching around 1,000,000 people.
In New York State, community renewable electricity supply programs (CCAs) make up about ¼ of the competitive renewable electricity purchases, supporting existing renewable infrastructure and offering protective contracts to participating residents and businesses.
Continuing our vision, Joule is entering new markets and supporting communities in building renewable assets, with a focus on benefiting disadvantaged communities.
